Follow Proper Roofing Installation Tips To Avoid Future Problems

Installing metal roofing has changed over the years, due to the changing technologies and materials that are available. From the traditional asphalt shingles, to cedar shakes, as well as the newest, fiberglass shingles. While the new fiberglass shingles are much more durable and efficient, they often will show all the slight imperfections in your roof. So careful planning is required when choosing the fiberglass shingles, starting with a smooth, level nailing surface, or the sheathing. Here are a couple installation tips to help your job go well.
The surface upon which your shingles will be nailed is the most important. You can use plywood or oriented strand board (OSB),but be sure to check that your roof line is level, as little as a ¼ inch off and it will eventually cause you grief, either in the uneven appearance or in the way in which the run off will go. OSB is now the most common sheathing material used, as the price tends to be a lot less then regular plywood. OSB is just wood fibers that are highly compressed, then laminated to provide a very durable, long lasting base.

Another very often overlooked area when shingling your roof is to provide for proper roof top ventilation. Your roof serves two main purposes, the first is very obvious, to keep the outside elements like the rain and the snow out. The other is to allow your roof to get rid of the moisture that is given off from people’s daily activities living inside. When the moisture has no place to go, it will accumulate and eventually cause you major problems.

Venting the air from such things as your bathroom fan, kitchen fans, stove hood fans and dryers, so that the air dispelled goes directly outside is very crucial. Most of these fans and filters can be side vented. That means the venting does not have to be strung up and through the roof, it can be vented straight out the side of your house. This can save you many headaches, especially if it’s a renovation that you’re doing.

The proper spacing of the sheathing is another important element to keep in mind. Wood will expand and contract with the changing weather conditions. Having you sheathing spaced and nailed correctly will increase the durability and efficiency of your roof. Allowing for about 1/8 inch in between the plywood or OSB sheeting is recommended. Installing a proper underlayment felt over the sheathing will help protect the sheathing as well.

If you simply follow the common roofing installation tips, then you’ll give your roof a long effective lifespan. No matter what type of shingles you’re installing, be sure to follow the manufactures instructions to avoid having any of the warranties nullified.

Installing metal roofing is best left to the professionals if you cannot easily walk on your roof due to it's steepness. However, if yours is a basic installation and you want to tackle it yourself make sure you have the correct tools and instructions before you begin.
