Synthetic Roofing Under Layment Materials Are The Most Advanced Yet

Some amazing advances have been made over the last few years in the materials that the roofing underlay is made of. Starting with the synthetic roofing under layment variety, which has become increasingly more popular then the traditional felt type. The underlay is widely considered a vital part of you roofing system. Whether you’re installing asphalt shingles, cedar shakes, or fiberglass shingles, you need to provide the sheathing with proper protection from water and moisture penetration, all the while allowing for it to vent properly.
Under layment basically comes in three different varieties; felt, synthetic and self-adhering ice-and-water barriers. Although the asphalt felt under layment has been in use for over 50 years, the synthetic variety is the one that has provided all the excitement in the roofing industry.

They are made of a synthetic polymer blends, and each manufacturer has a slightly different process in their construction. These new synthetic under layment blends are providing for a safer area in which for workers to walk while installing them. The manufacturers claim them to be rip resistant and wrinkle free. Making it much easier and safer to work with, from the professional installer, to the do-it-yourselfer.

Although the synthetic roofing under layment is completely waterproof, it is also designed to be much more ‘breathable’ then the traditional felt materials. They’re especially popular the Florida roofing industry where they see their fair share of larger thunderstorms and hurricanes that drop an enormous amount of water.

They allow for the moisture to easily pass through, making them mold resistant. Another great advantage when using a synthetic under layment is that they are much lighter then felt. When you’re working way up there on a high roof, they will be much easier to manipulate into the proper position.

With all these benefits of the synthetic material, why would you choose anything else? Well most are not, but be aware that the synthetic roofing under layment will run you a few dollars more then the felt. However, if you’re planning to stay in your house for many years to come, then by choosing a synthetic underlay, you’ll be sleeping better at night for years and years to come.
